venrog asked:

I want to connect my desktop and laptop computers so I can transfer files between them. Is there a simple way to do this? I connect to the internet using the same connection via a router connected to the desktop.

Go to an electronic store and get a USB transfer cable.

setup a network connection between the two and then turn on sharing for folders you want to share between the two computers.

    depends,

if both your desktop and laptop have wifi you can connect on a peer to peer connection, or if you want use bluetooth, and have each device match together.

if you want you can also use wires and use a program like laplink, you would need serial cables to connect both computers to each other, similar to what you would do wirelessly on a peer to peer connection.

visit your local PC store and checkout a laplink cable… though there may be some brand names nowadays…

    good luck

Either setup home network and file sharing or buy a crossover cable to physically connect the two computers using the “setup an advanced connection” option

Just make sure the workgroup names on both computers are the same (right click my computer, select properties, click computer name tab, and if you need to change one click change,) next enable file sharing on the folder (right click folder, select sharing and security, click share this folder and allow users to change files), and if there is a firewall active on either PC make sure it is set to allow communication between the pc’s ip addresses (I would just allow a block of 10 if set to dhcp). Now you should be able to double click my network places, view workgroup computers, and see the other PC and the shared folder(s). Hope this helps!

Well, you need to connect your laptop to the same router if it isn’t already. Assuming you run Windows, any version, first make sure you put the same group name in both, then enable file & printer sharing in both machines, finally share the folders you will use to copy files. For better instructions than I can give you here, just put “file sharing” in the search window of Windows Help. That will lead you through it.

    ok
    Set up Home network
    ===============
If you cannot find these locations search for them in windows help files
    Click start >help and support.

Wire in all computers and printer to the router using cat 5 cable from their Ethernet ports. Cat 5 is faster than wifi.

    Then on Each computer:

    1.My Computer >Folder Options>View Tab>tick “use simple file sharing”
2.In My computer Right click the Hard Drive that you want to share >sharing and search > tick share the folder in network
3.On desktop screen select the my computer icon and right click the icon >properties >computer name tab > Change> bullet workgroup and type in WORKGROUP
4.In control panel category view >network and internet connections
a.select network connections > Find the LAN connection Icon >right click >enable
b.Find the Windows Firewall pop up >bullet Off ( disable any other firewall programs)
c.Find the LAN connection icon >right click >repair
d.In LAN connection properties pop up > Tick the four items in the main window > in properties screen for Internet Protocol >general tab >bullet two auto instructions
5.Using Explorer, expand My Network Places in the directory tree >select Workgroup > click on workgroup and what you can see in the results. This is your home network., you should see each computer that is in the Workgroup domain.
6.You can plug a network printer in the router and load the network printer drivers into each computer and each computer can access the same printer.
7.If you have a sensitive part of a computer that you do not want to share on the network, right click and un tick the sharing.. This can be the Hard drive, partition, folder or file.
8.You do not have to have sharing enabled on your computer to see others, you need sharing on Your computer enabled so others can see you.
9.After all computers are turned on and running, enable the firewall program you use on each computer.
