How to replace the RTC battery in laptop computers?

hh asked:
my laptop (toshiba, satellite 1405) is getting old and the real time clock battery is no longer rechargeable. so everytime I turn on the computer, the system clock is always changed back to 1999. I was wondering if I can change the battery myself, or do I have to take it to a computer store (and how much would that cost)? I heard that the RTC battery is a small button-like battery and is really cheap, but I didn’t see it when I opened the back of the laptop. Any idea? thanks a lot for your help.

That battery is usually below the keyboard plugged into the motherboard…just take it off and you might be able to see it. I’m not totally sure on that model though. Yes, they are usually very cheap, although you might need to get a special one from Toshiba.

Toshiba notebooks are just as easy to be taken apart as others.
Just take pictures as you dissassemble each part of the notebook.

Your best bet is to smash it open and find it then replace it……

That battery looks like a big watch battery and they are pretty cheap. Usually they are located on the mainboard of the computer somewhere. On a laptop that’s likely deep inside it’s belly and hard to get at. You could try to take it apart further, just remember where all the screws go.
Sounds like you might need a new laptop. By brother got one for free from this place. There are a couple to choose from and they aren’t crappy ones. I’m working on getting mine right now. It’s not too difficult. pretty painless really. Just sign up for 1 free trial or something from their list of things and then get a few other people to do the same.
