I need to know what kind of cable to use so that I can transfer data from one laptop to another. I dont have wireless but both laptops have usb ports and ethernet ports and run on XP. I want to drag and drop my files from one computer to another. Thank you.

You can use USB, but you need a special cable that has identical ends. They’re a bit pricey and the process can be a bit tricky. Your best bet (and easiest) is to get an ethernet “crossover” cable and connect the two in a peer-to-peer network. It’s cheaper, and you have wizards to walk you through it. Much easier as well.

Yes, you can use an ‘A’ to ‘A’ USB cable or get a crossover network cable to hook the two together.

I’m not sure about the USB, but with two ethernet ports you can connect two PC’s using an ethernet crossover cable. You can ask for these at any major electronics or computer store.
You can get full directions from the microsoft support page here:

You can use a crossover network cable or transfer files via a thumb drive. Or you can use a router to connect them via network as well. There are usb cable manufacturer with the ability to connect to computers together but require specific software. I ahve used the in the past as a dell support representative so know they exist just dont know where you can get them. You can also connect via serial or parrallel the smae way. However the draws back to using usb serial or parrallel are speed. Serial and parrellel transfer at less than a mb and usb’s max currently is 2 mb. so network is still fastest way to go
hope this helps
