i would refer you to a dell or hp. i like them both. my business machines are dell with vista operating systems no problems here and everything works great.

It depends on what you want a computer for. (word [processing, net surfing gaming etc). Determine your needs and then consult this website that gives comparisons of various laptops in different price ranges.
You might find one that exactly meets your needs and have some of your $1000 left over for something else.
